At GSAT we have widely adopted and implemented acrossed school the approved curriculum of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth (MOEC) for Greek schools of the Diaspora. For over 50 years, Greek community education in the UK, both within and outside London, has significantly contributed to promoting the Greek language and culture, maintaining Greek language proficiency, and shaping future citizens capable of thriving in a multicultural world. In addition, our curriculum aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and prepares students for the Ellinomatheia examinations.
To further enhance and improve Greek language education for children of Greek descent abroad, this new curriculum for Greek Community Schools under the Cypriot Educational Mission (K.E.A.) has been developed. This curriculum represents the culmination of systematic efforts to support education abroad, considering the unique needs of both teachers and students, and is backed by continuous support from the Cypriot government and the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth (Y.P.A.N).
The curriculum aims to provide a structured framework for teaching Greek in community schools, supporting both theoretical and practical activities to promote the language. It emphasizes expected learning outcomes based on Success and Proficiency Indicators, focusing on the four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) tailored to different age groups (Kindergarten and Pre-primary, Grades A-B, Grades C-D, and Grades E-F). Additionally, the curriculum integrates cross-curricular teaching of themes related to Cypriot and Greek culture (History, Mythology, Music, Dance, Traditions, and Customs).
Various methodological approaches and practical strategies are presented in the curriculum, such as games, songs, storytelling, and technology use, to assist teachers in their daily tasks and enhance the quality of teaching Greek as a foreign language to pre-primary and primary school children. These strategies aim to maximize the use of the language in diverse communication contexts.
The Director of Primary Education and I personally welcome the electronic publication of the curriculum for community schools. We extend our gratitude to the writing team for undertaking the challenging task of its preparation, following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which provides a common basis for curriculum development in Europe. I am confident that the teaching staff of the Cypriot Educational Mission's schools will effectively utilize the curriculum as a valuable guide, adding significant value to the goals of community education in today's globalized era.
